CHICAGO— In partnership with the American Chemical Society (ACS), Navy Pier is thrilled to host ACS Kids Zone, a free interactive program featuring science activities from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 in the Fifth Third Family Pavilion.
The fun-filled event offering hands-on science activities will feature exciting educational giveaways and more. Children of all ages, accompanied by legal guardians, can participate in the experience. ACS Kids Zones are hosted by ACS volunteers to teach the public about the importance and relevance of chemistry.
The ACS Committee on Community Activities and ACS President Angela K. Wilson, along with partners such as the ACS Chicago Local Section, Navy Pier, and others, will celebrate the Fall 2022 meeting theme, “Sustainability in a Changing World,” with three activities for kids.
The “Color with Bugs” experiment incorporates crushed cochineal beetles and water to make a vibrant color-changing dye. Kids will make and take a bright, beautiful bookmark they made while learning science. Children will also make a “UV Bead Bracelet.” The UV-light-detecting-beads change color in sunlight.
There is a growing need to investigate alternative energy resources due to the depletion of petroleum, a widely used energy source. Energy from the sun is free, readily available, and a plentiful resource that can be collected by solar cells to generate electricity. The “Blackberry Solar Cells” experiment helps children understand solar cells and the importance of this form of energy.
Note: All activities and dates are subject to change.
